Overview

1100 Louisiana in Houston, TX, is a Class A high-rise office building with granite cladding and a front entrance covered with a waterproofing membrane and a pedestal paver system.  The owners of 1100 Louisiana wanted to improve the visual appeal of the entrance that was to include a water feature. They contracted with a local architectural firm, who hired K&A to provide waterproofing design and consulting. Our services included assessing the existing construction and conditions, developing waterproofing specifications and details, and working with the out-of-town water feature company to produce a watertight entrance with pedestal pavers.

During construction, K&A performed various on-site tests to validate that the various substrates were properly prepared and ready to receive the waterproofing membrane. These tests included ASTM D 4263, Standard Test Method for Indicating Moisture in Concrete by the Plastic Sheet Method and peel adhesion testing of the waterproofing membrane to the concrete substrate. Although K&A did not design the waterproofing system within the water features (this was performed by an out-of-state design firm), we were requested to investigate the cause for membrane failure and to develop the detail and methodology for the tie-in of two dissimilar waterproofing membranes. Working closely with the architectural, general contractor, and waterproofing firms, this project was successfully completed and can be experienced in Downtown Houston.
